Activities
The New Fairgrounds outside Milan were built in the area previously occupied by Agip’s Rho Refinery.  The access road works for the Fairgrounds involved a complex hub of interchanges between the road system serving the New Fairgrounds, and the motorway system in the form of the A4 Turin – Milan motorway, the A8 Milan – Lakes motorway, and Milan’s Western By-pass.  The Cerchiarello tunnel was part of the works done for the access road system for the New Fairgrounds, and covers an overall length of 852 m. It is rectangular in section and was built with a single bore tunnel for each direction of travel, with an exit ramp towards the Fairgrounds.  The design for the tunnel included the solutions adopted to guarantee the primary functions of lighting and ventilation, under emergency conditions as well, with the use of UPS units, electricity generator units, particular lamp fixings, and the use of built-in cable ducts.  The problems related to atmospheric pollution were dealt with by using eco-active photocatalytic products on the walls and vault of the tunnel, which are able to reduce pollutants by means of specific lighting systems with U.V.A. lamps.  The system for purifying and disposing of water from the roadway, makes use of first rainwater tanks, and a series of automatic raising units for emptying them.

The works done on behalf of the Autostrada dei Fiori Company, related to refurbishing the lighting systems in the tunnels and at interchanges, and are part of a general project to refurbish the tunnel systems and for implementing technologies.

The works were part of the actions required to make the tunnel conform to the standards in terms of Legislative Decree 264/06 “safety in tunnels”.

Activities
The tunnel was set up for operating drills by the fire brigades.
The area covered by the works is located in the Meysattaz suburb of the town of Saint Christophe at an altitude of 600 m above sea level, immediately after the municipal road that connects the centre of Saint Christophe to the Beauregard Hospital in Aosta, at the opening in the Sorreley-Meysattaz tunnel.  The land to be affected by the works are indicated on sheet N° 37 of the land registry diagram for the town of Saint Christophe as lots 396 and 398, owned by the Client, S.A.V. S.p.A.

Works outside the tunnel
– Construction of a semi-basement space that will house the change rooms, ablution facilities, stores, technical rooms and electricity cabin.
– Construction of a prefabricated chalet for use as an office and meeting rooms
– Refurbishing the entrance to the tunnel
– Setting up special and remote control systems

Works inside the tunnel
– Refurbishing the tunnel opening by laying a new surface and cladding the bases in reflective enamelled steel panels
